About the role
 
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Departmental Health and Safety Officer
This is a pivotal role responsible for ensuring the highest standards of health and safety across both office and laboratory environments. You will provide expert guidance, lead health and safety initiatives, and ensure compliance with University and legislative safety requirements.
 

Key Responsibilities

General Health & Safety

  • Conduct annual departmental health and safety inspections and report findings.

  • Advise on safe working procedures and practices across all departmental activities.

  • Monitor compliance with University health and safety policies and report deficiencies.

  • Investigate accidents and incidents, report findings, and recommend remedial actions.

  • Coordinate Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments and oversee trained assessors.

  • Maintain clear and effective communication on health and safety matters across the Department.

  • Draft, review and implement Departmental safety policies and the Statement of Safety Organisation.

  • Ensure sufficient First Aid coverage and training.

  • Represent the Department at University and Divisional safety meetings.

Laboratory Safety Management

  • Monitor lab safety, cleanliness, and waste disposal procedures.

  • Manage safety-critical lab equipment contracts and statutory maintenance.

  • Lead initiatives to promote sustainability in laboratory practices.

  • Support groups with hazardous chemical waste disposal and assist with SOP and risk assessment preparation.

  • Oversee ultra-low freezer monitoring and ensure compliance for HTA samples.

  • Support the use of the 'ipassport' platform for managing human tissue and liaise with Radiation Protection services as required.

Selection Criteria

  • Degree or equivalent vocational qualification in a scientific or technical field, or substantial equivalent experience.

  • Significant experience working in life sciences research and biocontainment labs.

  • Extensive knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation in a scientific setting, including Biosafety Containment Level 2.

  • Familiarity with the Human Tissue Act and radiation safety is essential.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage empathetically and effectively at all levels.

  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.

  • Proficiency in IT systems including Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn new software.
