About the role

To apply for this role you must have:

  • Proven experience at national or equivalent level of the media, either as a news journalist or in a press office/communications office/public affairs department/equivalent which deals with high-profile issues with multiple stakeholder groups
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver strategic communication plans
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, implement and evaluate proactive and creative communication strategies for a large and complex organisation

We are seeking an experienced and self-directed Strategic Communications Manager to lead high-impact communications on student and education matters at a world-leading university. This is an exciting opportunity to shape how the University presents its priorities, policies, and achievements in areas such as admissions, teaching and learning, student funding, and wider higher education policy.

The position is set to commence ASAP and will be full-time for an initial duration of 12 weeks with a pay rate of £24.74 per hour + holiday pay

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver integrated communications strategies using a range of channels (media relations, digital, social media, briefings, etc.).
  • Lead proactive and reactive media engagement, advising senior staff on high-profile issues and preparing public statements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, policymakers, and internal stakeholders to support advocacy of the University’s student-related priorities.
  • Create compelling content including news stories, case studies, and digital materials to engage key audiences.
  • Monitor national education policy and media trends, ensuring the University’s messages align with strategic priorities.
  • Act as a trusted advisor and spokesperson, and contribute to forward media planning and out-of-hours response where necessary.
  • Oversee communications responses to sensitive or high-profile topics and deputise for the Head of Communications as needed.

Selection Criteria:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience.
  • Substantial experience in media or public affairs, ideally in a complex, high-profile organisation.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver strategic communication plans.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with strong editorial judgment.
  • Deep understanding of UK higher education policy and media landscape.
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders and managing reputational issues with diplomacy.
  • Strong digital and social media literacy.
  • Calm, confident, and effective under pressure with excellent interpersonal skills.
