About the role

To apply for this role you must have:

  • Proficiency in using accounting software (e.g., Sage, Oracle, SAP, or similar)
  • Experience of financial processes/administration
  • Excellent IT skills, in particular in the use of spreadsheets

We are looking for a detail-oriented Finance Assistant to support the daily operations within the department.

The position is set to commence as soon as possible and will be full-time for an initial duration of 4 weeks with a pay rate of £14.98 per hour + holiday pay.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to straightforward enquiries, providing advice on financial procedures and policies and referring to the Finance officer where necessary
  • Responsible for raising purchase requisitions in the Oracle Financial System and deal with anomalies, escalating complex queries to the most appropriate person
  • Responsible for raising invoices/journals in the Oracle Financial system for income to be collected by a Faculty (e.g. Donations, conference income and recharges between faculties and colleges)
  • Responsible for the processing of payroll, studentship, expense forms and invoice payments and deal with anomalies, escalating complex queries to the most appropriate person.
  • To ensure that all items of agreed expenditure (e.g. Faculty allowance grants, relief of burden payments/buy-outs, lecture payments) are recorded and monitored
  • Responsible for updating, providing and distributing relevant month-end and year-end financial reports for monitoring and checking by the Finance Officer and Faculty Head of Administration and Finance as necessary
  • Recording and reimbursement of petty cash claims, ensuring that these comply with the University payments manual
  • Ensure all financial transactions are carried out in accordance with the University and external financial regulations
  • Maintain good working relationships across the Division and the University’s central finance office

Selection Criteria:

  • Proficiency in using accounting software (e.g., Sage, Oracle, SAP, or similar) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (e.g., VLOOKUP, pivot tables, data analysis).
  • A good standard of education to A level standard or equivalent
  • Previous experience in an office environment
  • Experience of financial processes/administration
  • Excellent IT skills, in particular in the use of spreadsheets
  • A methodical, systematic approach and excellent attention to detail
  • Strong organisational skills with demonstrable experience of prioritising a varied workload and meeting deadlines using own initiative and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to remain calm and patient when under pressure or dealing with difficult individuals
  • Good communication skills with a friendly, proactive and helpful approach
