About the role

We are seeking an experienced and strategic HR Manager to lead the delivery of a high-quality, responsive HR service within a large, research-intensive department. This role combines operational leadership, expert advisory support, people management, and strategic contribution to departmental planning and culture.

The position is set to commence ASAP and will be full-time for an initial duration of 12 weeks with a pay rate of £25.19 per hour + holiday pay

Key Duties:

  • Lead and manage the HR team to deliver a professional, solutions-focused service
  • Provide expert HR advice across the full employee lifecycle to senior colleagues and line managers
  • Oversee all HR operations, ensuring high standards of service delivery
  • Act as senior HR adviser to the Head of Department and other senior leaders
  • Manage complex employee relations casework with discretion and sound judgement
  • Lead HR projects, policy development and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Coach and develop line managers to build confidence and capability in people management
  • Analyse and interpret HR data to inform strategic decision-making
  • Represent the department at Divisional and University HR networks
  • Build strong working relationships across the department and contribute to an inclusive, positive working environment

Selection Criteria:

  • Recent experience managing HR operations within a complex organisation
  • Strong knowledge of UK employment law
  • Proven experience handling complex employee relations matters
  • Strategic mindset combined with a practical, hands-on approach
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience coaching and supporting managers
  • Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Experience using HR data to inform decision-making
