About the role

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Welfare, Wellbeing & EDI Lead to play a central role in supporting the welfare of both students and staff within the College community. This role will lead the development and delivery of wellbeing initiatives, provide direct welfare support, and champion Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) across all aspects of College life.

Working collaboratively with key colleagues including the HR Manager, Chaplain and Welfare Dean, Academic Administrator, and Tutor for Admissions, the successful candidate will ensure that the College maintains a robust, responsive, and proactive welfare framework that promotes resilience, inclusion, and a supportive environment for all members of the community.

Key Responsibilities

Welfare Support

  • Provide confidential welfare advice and support to students and staff, including direct casework and guidance.

  • Respond to urgent or complex welfare situations, including cases involving acute mental distress.

  • Refer individuals to appropriate internal or external support services and coordinate follow-up care.

  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and legally compliant welfare records.

Out-of-Hours Support

  • Support the College’s out-of-hours welfare provision by advising Junior Deans, who act as first responders overnight.

  • Provide guidance in urgent or serious welfare incidents and ensure appropriate escalation and support.

Leadership & Strategy

  • Act as the College’s Welfare Lead, overseeing both operational and strategic welfare provision.

  • Lead regular welfare meetings and contribute to institutional decision-making on wellbeing matters.

  • Develop and implement proactive strategies that promote wellbeing, resilience, and a healthy college culture.

  • Conduct risk assessments relating to welfare and wellbeing concerns.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion across the College community.

  • Support initiatives that foster an inclusive and respectful environment.

  • Work with colleagues to embed EDI principles into policies, practices, and student support services.

Policy & Collaboration

  • Maintain and develop welfare policies in line with legal requirements and best practice.

  • Liaise sensitively with academic staff, college officers, healthcare professionals, and university welfare services.

  • Represent the College at relevant university committees, inter-collegiate forums, and external meetings.

  • Build relationships with welfare professionals and external agencies to support effective referrals and support pathways.

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant qualifications and professional experience, including experience of working in a student-facing role within a Higher or Further Education institution, and familiarity with mental health and disability-related issues facing students.
  • Knowledge of relevant welfare policies and best practice Demonstrable understanding of cultural diversity, and experience of managing sensitive situations with discretion.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of Health and safety regulations and the broader values of the College (including in equality, diversity and inclusivity).
