About the role

We are seeking a skilled and proactive Facilities Technician to support the maintenance, operation and safety of a busy research environment. This varied role combines building maintenance, facilities management, workshop support and technical assistance to ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the department.

The position is set to commence ASAP and will be full-time for an initial duration of 12 weeks with a pay rate of £14.98 per hour + holiday pay

Key Duties:

  • Carry out building inspections, maintenance tasks and minor repairs, reporting issues and coordinating remedial work where required
  • Liaise with contractors, engineers and Estates teams to support maintenance and facilities projects
  • Monitor and maintain building systems, including lighting, fire alarms, access control and safety equipment
  • Support goods handling, office moves, room reconfigurations and event preparations
  • Participate in an on-call rota for emergency response outside normal working hours
  • Repair and maintain laboratory equipment and specialist systems, providing technical support to users
  • Maintain workshop facilities, equipment and documentation, ensuring safe working practices and appropriate risk assessments
  • Support maintenance of access control systems, portable appliance testing (PAT) and departmental vehicles
  • Assist with health and safety compliance within laboratory and workshop environments
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure high standards of facilities management and customer service

Selection Criteria:

  • Experience working within a facilities management or building maintenance environment
  • Technical knowledge of building maintenance and repair
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements within laboratory or industrial settings
  • Experience carrying out or working to risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to respond calmly to emergencies
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to produce clear written documentation, including method statements and maintenance records
