About the role

We are seeking an experienced Welfare and Transition Manager to provide expert welfare leadership and direct student support during our pre-university transition programme.

Working closely with the Programme Manager and Head of Outreach, you will play a central role in supporting students' wellbeing, academic transition and engagement throughout the residential programme. You will provide one-to-one welfare support, assess and manage risk, coordinate support with University, college and NHS services, and act as the programme's senior safeguarding lead.

This is a varied and rewarding role requiring sound judgement, excellent relationship-building skills and significant experience supporting students in higher education. You will also provide guidance to programme staff, contribute to welfare planning and programme evaluation, and help ensure participants receive timely, coordinated support throughout their transition to university.

The role is primarily home-based, with a significant on-site presence required during the residential delivery period.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide confidential one-to-one welfare support, including triage, risk assessment, referral and case coordination.
  • Act as the programme's senior safeguarding lead.
  • Monitor student welfare, behaviour and engagement, responding appropriately to emerging concerns.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential welfare records.
  • Liaise with colleges, University services and external agencies to coordinate support.
  • Provide advice and guidance to Welfare and Academic Advisers, student ambassadors and programme staff.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota during programme delivery.
  • Contribute to programme evaluation and continuous improvement.

About you

You will have substantial experience of delivering student welfare support within higher education and be confident managing complex or sensitive situations. You will be comfortable working collaboratively across multiple teams and exercising professional judgement when supporting students and advising colleagues.

This role would particularly suit applicants with experience in positions such as Welfare Dean, Welfare Tutor, Senior Tutor, College Counsellor, Student Welfare Adviser, Academic Registrar or similar student support roles.

Essential criteria

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Significant experience providing one-to-one student welfare support within a higher education setting.
  • Experience of assessing risk and managing complex or sensitive student welfare cases.
  • Experience of making decisions on student welfare matters and working collaboratively with senior colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of student support, safeguarding and referral processes within a university environment.
  • Experience of working effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders to coordinate student support.
  • Experience of maintaining accurate and confidential case records.
  • Experience of supporting or advising colleagues on welfare, safeguarding or pastoral matters.
