About the role

We are seeking a Temporary Research Assistant to join our research team for a fixed two-week period. This short-term role would suit a recent graduate, or someone close to completing a relevant degree, with practical laboratory experience and an interest in experimental microbiology.

The successful candidate will work under the guidance of senior colleagues and contribute to ongoing microbiological research activities within a laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake experimental microbiology work under the guidance of senior colleagues.

  • Culture and handle microorganisms using appropriate aseptic techniques.

  • Prepare microbiological media, reagents, buffers and other materials required for experimental work.

  • Carry out defined microbiological assays and experimental procedures in accordance with established protocols.

  • Undertake sample preparation and relevant molecular biology techniques where required.

  • Follow established experimental protocols and, following discussion with senior colleagues, adapt routine procedures where appropriate.

  • Accurately collect, record and organise experimental data.

  • Undertake preliminary analysis and presentation of experimental results where required.

  • Maintain clear and accurate laboratory records.

  • Use standard microbiology laboratory equipment appropriately and safely.

  • Identify routine technical or experimental problems and discuss appropriate solutions with senior colleagues.

  • Assist with the organisation and maintenance of laboratory materials, reagents and consumables.

  • Ensure samples, cultures and reagents are appropriately labelled, stored and handled.

  • Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe and well-organised laboratory environment.

  • Work collaboratively with members of the research group and relevant technical staff.

  • Participate in discussions concerning experimental progress and communicate results to the supervisor.

  • Comply with all relevant departmental health and safety requirements, risk assessments and standard operating procedures.

Essential Criteria

Applicants should:

  • Hold, or be close to completing, a first degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology, or another relevant discipline.

  • Have at least one year of experimental laboratory experience in a UK laboratory environment.

  • Have practical experience of microbiological techniques.

  • Have experience working with microorganisms and applying appropriate aseptic techniques.
