About the role

We are seeking a proactive and customer-focused IT & AV Technician to join a busy IT team within a prestigious higher education environment in Oxford.

Reporting to the Head of ICT, you will provide first- and second-line technical support to staff, students, fellows and conference guests, ensuring the smooth operation of IT systems, networks and audiovisual (AV) facilities across multiple sites.

This varied, hands-on role will involve troubleshooting hardware and software issues, maintaining IT infrastructure, installing and configuring equipment, and supporting meetings, events and conferences. You will play a key role in delivering a reliable, secure and efficient IT service, helping users make the most of the organisation's technology.

The successful candidate will have strong technical troubleshooting skills, a customer-focused approach and the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment. Flexibility may be required to support business-critical incidents and occasional out-of-hours IT and AV requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • IT Support: Deliver responsive first- and second-line IT support to staff, students, fellows and visitors, resolving technical issues in person, by telephone and via email.
  • IT Operations: Support the day-to-day maintenance, administration and development of IT facilities across multiple sites, ensuring systems remain secure, up to date and fully operational.
  • Hardware and Software: Install, configure, maintain and upgrade desktop computers, laptops, peripherals and software applications, including deploying new devices using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit.
  • Network and Server Management: Monitor network infrastructure and servers, identify potential issues, implement fixes where appropriate and escalate complex problems as required.
  • System Maintenance and Security: Conduct regular system health checks, monitor backups and system logs, apply software patches and help maintain the security and reliability of IT services.
  • Audiovisual Support: Set up, maintain and troubleshoot AV equipment for meetings, presentations, events and conferences, ensuring all technical requirements are met.
  • Equipment Procurement: Assist with the procurement, maintenance and replacement of IT equipment, ensuring devices meet operational and performance requirements.
  • Laptop Management: Maintain the laptop fleet, ensuring devices are secure, fully functional and ready for deployment across a range of uses.
  • Telecommunications: Investigate and resolve telecommunication issues to support reliable communication services.
  • Training and Inductions: Organise and deliver IT inductions and training sessions for new and existing staff and students where appropriate.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with university IT services, other colleges and relevant technical teams to resolve issues and maintain effective IT operations.
  • Out-of-Hours Support: Coordinate with the Graduate Computer Assistant to ensure out-of-hours IT and AV requirements are communicated and managed effectively.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate technical documentation, system records and procedures to support efficient troubleshooting and service delivery.

About You

You will be a technically capable and organised IT professional who enjoys helping users and resolving a wide range of technical challenges. You will be comfortable working independently when required while also contributing effectively as part of a wider IT team.

You will demonstrate excellent communication and problem-solving skills, a strong customer service ethos and the ability to explain technical issues clearly to users with varying levels of IT knowledge.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience providing first- and second-line IT support in a professional environment.
  • Proficiency in supporting Windows and Linux systems, with experience installing and supporting desktop operating systems, including Windows, Linux and macOS.
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining desktop software and applications across different operating systems.
