We are seeking an organised and proactive Assistant Laboratory Manager to support the effective running of our research laboratories. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring smooth daily operations, maintaining compliance with safety standards, and supporting staff and students in a busy research environment.
The position is set to commence ASAP and will be full-time for an initial duration of 12 weeks with a pay rate of £18.80 per hour + holiday pay
Key Duties:
- Support the Laboratory Manager with day-to-day operations to ensure efficient research delivery
- Oversee smooth running of the lab by monitoring equipment functionality, managing stock levels, and placing timely orders
- Assist with the induction and training of staff, students, and visitors
- Contribute to writing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), COSHH forms, risk assessments, and laboratory health and safety records
- Maintain and update laboratory asset records
- Process and review laboratory orders and maintain purchasing documentation
- Provide guidance and support to less experienced lab members as required
- Deputise for the Laboratory Manager when needed, including chairing meetings and overseeing operations
- Promote and uphold principles of equality, diversity, inclusion, mutual respect, and sustainability across all lab activities
- Undertake relevant training and additional duties as required
Selection Criteria:
- Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) in a relevant scientific discipline
- Experience working in a microbiology or related laboratory environment
- Strong knowledge of UK/EU health and safety legislation applicable to laboratory work
- Experience in procurement of laboratory equipment, consumables, and services
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Ability to work independently, use initiative, and anticipate potential issues
- Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
