We are recruiting for a Temporary Assistant University Fire Officer to join a centrally based Oxford University Department. This full-time, on-site role will start as soon as possible and run for an initial 12-week period.
About the Role
As Assistant University Fire Officer, you will support the rollout of a new Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) regime in line with upcoming legislation. This includes conducting quality assurance reviews of internal and external FRAs and contributing to updated fire strategies for a wide range of University buildings — from heritage sites to state-of-the-art research facilities and postgraduate accommodation.
You will also:
- Inspect fire precautions and provide risk-based recommendations.
- Support safe evacuation planning, including ensuring PEEPs are in place and understood.
- Liaise with Estates, Project Teams, Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, Building Safety Regulator, insurers, and internal departments on fire-related matters.
- Contribute to fire safety training programmes, audits, specialist talks, and incident investigations.
- Assist with maintaining the University’s “Golden Thread” fire safety documentation.
- Participate in the University’s EveryDaySafe improvement programme and support long-term safety planning.
Essential Criteria
- NVQ Level 4 Certificate (or equivalent) in Fire Safety.
- Excellent knowledge of fire safety legislation.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate others and find practical fire safety solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, identifying areas for improvement and offering practical, effective solutions.
