We are currently recruiting for a Temporary Financial Accountant to join a prestigious Oxford University College located in central Oxford. This is a full-time position for an initial 12-week period, starting as soon as possible.
Reporting to the Bursar, the Financial Accountant plays a key role within the finance team, ensuring accurate financial records, strong internal controls, and effective financial support across the College. The successful candidate will also provide supervision within the Finance Office, including areas such as Fees and Battels.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and reconcile monthly balance sheet accounts with full documentation
- Manage and forecast the College’s operational cashflow
- Prepare annual salary and capital budgets and financial forecasts
- Conduct variance analysis against budget
- Maintain the fixed asset register and review depreciation
- Perform monthly payroll checks, analysis, and reconciliations
- Prepare and submit pension returns and ensure timely HMRC payments (tax and NI)
- Oversee invoicing and financial transactions
- Produce quarterly VAT returns and financial statements for student bodies and committees
- Support year-end processes, including control files and SORP account schedules
- Liaise with external auditors
- Act as secretary to Finance, Risk and Scrutiny Committees
- Administer the College Healthcare Scheme and prepare P11Ds and benefits statements
About You
You will be a qualified accountant with strong technical accounting knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a busy finance team.
Essential skills and experience:
- An accountancy qualification is essential
- Must be an active member of a recognised accounting body
- Strong experience producing management accounts
- Solid understanding of internal controls, reconciliations, cash management and bookkeeping procedures
- Knowledge of payroll processes and related legislation (or willingness to learn)
- Strong experience using accounting software and advanced IT skills
- Proven ability to work effectively as part of a busy accounts team
- Strong spreadsheet and data analysis skills
