We are seeking a detail-oriented Chemical Safety & Hazardous Waste Technician to support the safe management of chemicals and hazardous materials within a laboratory environment. Working closely with the Departmental Chemical Safety Officer you will help ensure compliance with health and safety regulations while promoting safe laboratory practices.
The position is set to commence ASAP and will be part time 20-30 hours per week for an initial duration of 12 weeks with a pay rate of £16.92 per hour + holiday pay
Key Duties:
- Maintain accurate chemical inventories and ensure chemicals are stored safely in accordance with COSHH regulations
- Develop and review COSHH assessments and risk assessments with research groups
- Support the safe management and storage of portable pressurised gas cylinders
- Coordinate the safe disposal of chemicals and other hazardous waste materials
- Monitor laboratory safety standards and identify potential hazards or non-conformances
- Raise safety concerns promptly and assist with formal incident reporting where required
- Promote compliance with departmental health and safety procedures and best practice
- Maintain accurate safety records and provide administrative support for chemical safety activities
Selection Criteria:
- Degree in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent laboratory experience
- Experience working with hazardous substances and applying COSHH and risk assessments
- Ability to identify hazards and promote safe working practices in a laboratory environment
- Good organisational skills with strong attention to detail
- Knowledge of safe use of PPE and laboratory safety procedures
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research environment
